The Last Dinner, a short story

SYNOPSIS ... BIBLIOGRAPHY

Synopsis

Rita dreads going over to the Munro's for dinner. Selena, her best friend since childhood, lives in Calgary, but has come to visit her mother, Ethel Munro, in Vancouver. Although Rita is not one to make a scene, she can't stand the insuffereable Mrs. Munro. After a two-year hiatus, changing her phone number to escape Ethel, Rita makes a reluctant promise to come for dinner. For Ethel Munro, her life is a tragedy, and no one else's suffering compares to hers. Rita, however, is constantly annoyed and frustrated by Ethel's questions and commentary. If Rita ever raises a fuss, it isn't tolerated, but Ethel can ask anything of her, no matter how personal. By the end of "The Last Dinner", it being revealed that Rita has a history with Ethel's husband, the Munros pack for Calgary.
